Nanjing is a famous historical and cultural city in China, with a profound legacy of historical and cultural heritages. The School of Fine Arts at Nanjing Normal University is an important hub of arts in this city. It can be traced back to the Drawing and Handwork Department of Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902, and enjoys a history of 110 years as home to the first modern establishment of higher education in Fine Arts in China's educational history. During a period of over one century, a number of renowned painting artists and masters had taught here, including Li Shutong, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Chen Zhifo, Fu Baoshi, Lv Sibai, and Qin Xuanfu. The School has cultivated a large number of outstanding artists and excellent fine arts teachers, hence holds a significant position in the modern history of fine arts and art education. In particular, during the two decades when Mr. Xu Beihong taught here and served as the Dean, he advocated the educational philosophy of realistic arts, and encouraged inclusiveness and diversity in education. Xu Beihong’s fine arts education system has exerted irreplaceable and far-reaching influence for Chinese modern fine arts history and education in the 20th century.
After a century of vicissitude, the School of Fine Arts at Nanjing Normal University has been built into a modernized institute of higher learning with complete disciplines and competent teaching resources. It has 15 programs, more than 1,000 undergraduate students, and over 500 Master's and Doctoral students. For the disciplines of Fine Arts and Design, the School has developed complete disciplinary system and educational system that covered the whole process from undergraduate to Master’s degree, Doctoral degree and Post-doc stations, ranging from traditional arts, such as Chinese painting, calligraphy, oil painting, and sculpture, to modern and avant-garde arts, such as visual communication design, environmental design, product design, photography, and animation. The School has 20 professors, 23 associate professors, 11 doctoral supervisors, and 39 Master’s supervisors, all of whom have extensive professional experience in artistic creation and academic research in their respective areas of expertise. At the same time, the School has more than 3,500 square meters of laboratories, a rich collection of over 660,000 books and reference materials, as well as more than 230 titles of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. These conditions can form an excellent learning and research environment for both domestic and international students.
