On December 24th, 2020, the 8th session of "Out-of-Academics · Art Forum", jointly organized by School of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University and AMAC, was held in Xuezheng Building, Xianlin Campus. This lecture was given by Ni Kun, head of Chongqing Qi · HAUS Space.
Ni Kun, a native of Hunan Province, now lives in Chongqing. He was an artist. Now he is an independent curator and art writer. He is also Co-founder and Curator of Haus Space (2006-present). He has been visiting researcher in Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan (2014) and curator in Chongqing Xinghui Contemporary Art Museum (2015-2018). He continues to focus on the interaction between China's rapidly changing urban process and art in the context of globalization. On this basis, he has launched experimental art projects on "City and Reconstruction", "Migration and Nomadism", "Art and Rural", "Future and Design" and relevant international forums, which further show his multi-angle thinking about the current situation. Since 2015, while reflecting on the social functions of art institutions, he began to emphasize the public education of art institutions as a means of intervention to discuss the relationship between art and the public.
At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Ni led us to understand the nature of today's art institutions, which are characterized by strong flexibility, small size and clear positioning. The development model of art institutions is an escape and betrayal of the established art system. Mr. Ni mentioned some art institutions, for exemple, independent art Spaces, non-profit art Spaces, alternative Spaces, artist-run institutions, special art Spaces and subordinate Spaces of large art institutions. These different institutions have different jobs. In addition, the survival and foothold of art institutions must ask themselves: where is art resource platform? Where is the art takes place, research and production sites? These questions may come from the production of space, network connection, the encouragement of experimental art or the active dialogue between art and society.
Then, the work objectives of art institutions involve three levels of inquiry: "art and media", "relationship", "context and public issues". The starting point of the work is around two threads: the Young Artist Pilot Project and the International Artist Resident Project. Among them, the global flow of young artists shows a trend from country to city and from city to country. Finally, Mr. Ni shared the appreciation of many artists' resident cases.
At the end of the lecture, Mr. Meng Yao made a summary of the lecture based on what Mr. Ni said. Mr. Ni Kun had extensive and in-depth communication and discussion with all the teachers and students present.
