Shi Tao's "Republic of China Reputation"-the 101th Session of Beihong Forum was Successfully Completed

At 18:30 on October 17, 2020, the Beihong Forum of the School of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University was held in Room 501, Yuanmei Building, Xianlin Campus. This lecture was delivered by the doctoral tutor Hang Chunxiao from the Chinese National Academy of Arts.

Hang Chunxiao, born in Dangtu, Anhui in 1976. He graduated from the Chinese National Academy of Arts in 2006 with a doctorate degree in art history. And he stayed for work in the academy in the same year. He is currently a researcher and doctoral supervisor of the Fine Arts Research Institute of the academy. The monograph "Incremental Cultural Reform: An Investigation Centered on Traditional Painters in Beijing at the Beginning of the Republic of China" won the second "China Art Award·Theoretical Review Award".

This lecture revolved around Shi Tao's reputation in the Republic of China. Shi Tao did not possess the lofty status today in the Qing Dynasty, and was even considered "unknown as Yangzhou." The reason why he became the "Shi Tao" of today originated from the recognition of painting history during the Republic of China. This lecture used the correspondence of Xu Zhimo and Liu Haisu as clues to sort out the construction of Shi Tao's reputation in the Republic of China, and then discuss the internal transformation of painting history. On this basis, this lecture focused on analyzing the nationalist discourse and creative discourse behind this phenomenon, and pointed out that Shi Tao, as the production object of painting history knowledge, benefited from the new discourse of the Republic of China. Among them, the contacts of Liu Haisu, Lv Chen, Wang Yachen and others formed an interactive cognitive network that intertwined the knowledge production in Europe, Japan and even China, and became an important force in shaping Shi Tao's reputation in the Republic of China. This shows us that there are many hidden "global practices" in the dominant experience of Chinese art history in the 20th century. Before starting the explanation of historical textual research, Mr. Hang Chunxiao first pointed out that what today's lecture will discuss is not the real Shi Tao in history, but the establishment of the image of "Shi Tao" in the 20th century. He used the thinking of modern history to investigate the formation and development of Shi Tao's personal reputation, and to reflect on history itself through the investigation of history. Mr. Hang first narrated the origin of Shi Tao's status in the Republic of China from a picture album of Liu Haisu in 1928 and his correspondence with Xu Zhimo. Xu Zhimo's expectations for his best friend Liu Haisu led to the origin of Shi Tao's status in the Republic of China. Then Mr. Hang confirmed the origin and social foundation of Shi Tao's "Republic of China reputation" from four aspects: Shi Tao well-known in the Republic of China, Liu Haisu and Shi Tao, Shi Tao in the discourse of nationalism, and Shi Tao based on "creation". Mr. Hang's recount is not only analyzing Shi Tao's case, but also telling the development of the art world and the knowledge system of the society in the twentieth century in China, bringing the sociology and philosophy of the Western world and the entire humanistic development to China. History is in the process of development. It looked at the development of the world's 20th century art.

At the end of the lecture, Mr. Hang gave the scholars present a new direction for historical research. Our thinking on past history needs to be based on continuous reflection, reviewing our own deviations in historical understanding, so as to truly criticize and doubt the mindset that history has brought us. Mr. Hang Chunxiao's academic enthusiasm and passionate speech deeply infected every audience present.
