School of Chemistry and Materials Science

 The School of Chemistry and Materials Science of Nanjing Normal University is amongst the oldest institutions of higher education on Chemistry in China. It can be traced back to 1902, when the Physical Science and Chemistry Office were established in Sanjiang Normal College; and later went through the evolution of Liangjiang Excellent Normal Colledge and Private Ginling Women's University. Founded in 1952, Nanjing Normal College set up the Depatment of Physical Science and Chemistry based on the Department of Chemistry of Jinling College. In 1953 the Department of Chemistry was set up independently with Doctor Wu Maoyi, the first female Chinese doctor who graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Harvard University, as its head. In 1969, it was amalgamated by the Department of Chemistry of Jiangsu Institute of Education. In April 2000, the Department of Chemistry was rebuilt into School of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and was renamed as School of Chemistry and Materials Science in September 2010. 

School of Chemistry and Materials Science is now composed of three departments: Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Materials Science. It has the doctoral degree conferring spots of first-level disciplines for Chemistry and postdoctoral research center for Chemistry, Jiangsu Provincial Materials Science and Technology Preponderant Discipline, six research centers including National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Functional Materials, Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Bio-functional Materials, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of New Batteries, Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Medicine Functional Materials, Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Extraction Separation, Jiangsu Provincial Research Center  of New Fame Retardant Materials Engineering Technology, and Jiangsu Provincial  Engineering Research Center of Industrial Waste Solvent Regeneration; it also owns Jiangsu Provincial Chemistry Experimental Teaching Demonstrating Center, Jiangsu Provincial Chemical and Materials Practice Education Center and the First National and Provincial Training Base for Backbone Secondary School Chemistry Teachers. Chemistry Teaching and Learning, a journal edited by School of Chemistry and Materials Science, is published nationwide. School of Chemistry and Materials Science is also an attached institution of Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Education Chemical Specialized Committee.

In terms of faculty building, the School has brought together and introduced a number of outstanding talents from well-known universities and research institutes in the United States, Germany, Britain, Japan, South Korea and Singapore in recent years. The School currently employs 104 people, 74 full-time teachers including 41 professors (doctoral tutor 24); one “National Thousand plan” oversea expert, one “The Ministry of Education Program for Chang Jiang Scholars ", two “The Ministry of Education Program for Excellent Talents of the New Century”, one “Jiangsu Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Team”, two “Jiangsu Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Talents, six distinguished professors of Jiangsu Province, seven “Jiangsu "Six Talent Peaks" Project”; six with special government allowances; six “ Jiangsu 333 Project Science and Technology Leaders”; more than ten “Jiangsu "Qing Lan Project" Academic Leaders and Outstanding Young Backbone Teachers”. At present, 97% of the School’s teaching and research staff have doctoral degrees, 60% of the teaching faculty have overseas study experience, forming a contingent of talents with high academic level, great potential for development and reasonable age structure.

After years of construction and development, the School has now formed six discipline research directions including biomaterials, interfacial electrochemistry, inorganic synthetic chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, organic functional molecular design and synthesis, fine chemistry and related technologies through integration of various disciplines. Over the past five years, the School has undertaken more than 210 projects including "863" Project, key and general projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, projects from National Development and Reform Commission and Jiangsu Science and Technology Department with a research funding of nearly RMB 62 million; and more than 90 horizontal enterprise research cooperation programs with a research funding of nearly RMB 40 million. The School has published more than 580 SCI papers (293 with IF> 3.0) in internationally renowned academic journals including PNAS, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., Acc. Chem. Res., ACS Nano and etc.; has been granted 72 invention patents; has published nearly 20 academic monographs; and won 3 first prizes, 2 second prizes, 2 third prizes of provincial and ministerial level including the Outstanding Achievement Award in Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education (Science and Technology), China Petroleum & Chemical Industry Confederation (Science and Technology), Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. Two disciplines, Chemistry and Materials Science, have entered the top 1% of global research institutions in the ESI paper quantity and quality evaluation system.   

For a long time, the School of Chemistry and Materials Science from Nanjing Normal University have made constant progress on education and scientific research, and great contribution for the economic and social development of different regions and the whole country. In the future, the School will further discipline construction and constantly highlight the characteristics of personnel training and scientific research. Adhering to the academic culture of "seeking truth, innovation, tolerance and dedication," the School will continue to deepen the building of a "school-enterprise alliance", provide great service to Jiangsu, actively open to the whole country, and strengthen international cooperation and exchange with open education. The School will work hard together as a team, forge ahead in unity, seek mechanism innovation and scientific development, moving forward with the goal of building a distinctive and research-oriented high-level School.
