Lecture:Phosphonation Reaction Studies of Alkyl Radicals
On the morning of April 23, 2025, at the invitation of School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Prof. Chaozhong Li from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), gave a lecture titled “Phosphonation Reaction Studies of Alkyl Radicals” via offline meeting (Room 226, Huaxing Building), which was attended by some faculty members and graduate students.

Dr. Chaozhong Li graduated from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1988 and received his PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) (Supervisor: Dr. Cheng-Ye Yuan) in 1993, and joined SIOC as an assistant researcher in the same year, and then went to the Department of Chemistry, Iowa State University (ISU), USA, to carry out postdoctoral researches from 1994 to 1998, and has been working in Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), CAS since 1999. Since 1999, he has been working at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Li was selected as a member of the “Hundred Talents Program” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1999 and was awarded the “National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund” in 2003 and the “National Government Special Allowance” in 2006, and the “Leading Talents” of the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2010. In 2010, he was selected as one of the “Leading Talents” in Shanghai, and in 2019, he will be the head of the key innovation team of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and in 2020, he will be selected as one of the leading talents in scientific and technological innovation of the relevant national talent programs. Researcher Chaozhong Li has long focused on the research of organic radical chemical reactions, has published more than 100 academic articles and written 4 chapters of academic monographs; trained 45 PhDs and 20 masters.
Organophosphine compounds have a wide range of applications in medicine, agriculture, materials science and other fields, so the construction of carbon-phosphorus bonds, especially the phosphinylation reaction of C(sp3), is an important research content in organic chemistry. Traditional phosphonylation methods are limited to nucleophilic and electrophilic phosphonylation reactions, while alkyl radical phosphonylation reactions are almost a blank field. Prof. Chaozhong Li's group has carried out in-depth research in this direction, and was the first to report the copper-catalyzed coupling reaction of alkyl radicals with phosphite tris-phosphates, and then developed a series of visible-light-induced radical phosphinic acylation reactions, which opens up a new direction in the research of organophosphine chemistry.
After the report, Prof. Li Chaozhong had an in-depth discussion and exchange with the relevant teachers and students, and gave detailed answers to the concerns of the online teachers and students, which benefited everyone a lot, and the report was a complete success.
