Invitated by the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, the Collaborative Innovation Center of Biomedical Functional Materials of Jiangsu Province and the Key Laboratory of New Power Battery of Jiangsu Province, Prof. Shengqian Ma from the University of South Florida came to our school for academic exchange on June 17, 2019. On the morning of the same day, an academic report entitled "Task-Specific Design and Functionalization of Advanced Porous Organic Polymers for Water Purification" was presented in Room 226 of Huaxing Building. Teachers and students from related fields attended the academic report.
Dr. Shengqian Ma graduated from Jilin University in 2003 with a Ph.D. degree from the University of Miami in 2008. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Argonne National Laboratory from 2008 to 2010. He has served in the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Florida since 2010. He has achieved a series of innovations in the functionalization and application of metal organic framework compounds and porous organic polymers, and was awarded a tenured professor in advance in 2015. Professor Shengqian Ma has published more than 130 articles in academic journals such as Nature, Nature Commun., J.Am.Chem.Soc., ACIE., Adv. Mater., Chemical Science, and Chemical Society Review. He has cited more than 12,000 papers and an H factor of 56. He was selected for the 2014 and 2015 Thomson Reuters Global Highly Cited Researcher (Highly Cited Researcher). Professor Shengqian Ma received the China National Outstanding Self-financed Scholarship Award in 2007. He was awarded the Young Chemistry Prize of the American Chemical Society Inorganic Chemistry Branch and Director's Postdoctoral Fellowship of the US Department of Energy in 2008. In 2009, he received the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The IUPAC Youth Chemist Award, received the American Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2014, and the University of South Florida Distinguished Research Achievement Award in 2015.
In his report, Professor Shengqian Ma detailed some of the work progress of his group in recent years, especially in the design and functionalization of porous materials including covalent organic frameworks and porous organic polymers, separation of hydrocarbon-specific and removal of contaminants. Finally, Professor Shengqian Ma exchanged and discussed related issues raised by teachers and students. Professor Shengqian Ma’s enthusiastic report fully demonstrated his profound academic attainments and his love of scientific research, which gave many teachers and students a lot of inspiration.
