Lecture:Water, Wastewater and Reuse in Sao Paulo Megacity (Brazil)

On April 20, 2026, invited by the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Professor Marcelo A. Nolasco from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, visited the school and delivered an academic lecture titled Water, Wastewater and Reuse in Sao Paulo Megacity (Brazil): Opportunities and Challenges for teachers and students of our college. The lecture was undertaken by the Environmental Chemistry and Engineering Research Group.

Marcelo A. Nolasco is a professor at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH), University of São Paulo, Brazil (ranked 108th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings). He is a distinguished scholar in the field of Brazilian environmental engineering, and has long devoted himself to research on water pollution control, wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
In his lecture, Professor Marcelo A. Nolasco pointed out that the São Paulo Megacity, with a population of over 22 million, is confronted with structural water scarcity. The severe drought in 2014–2015 reduced reservoir water storage to less than 10%, resulting in extremely inadequate systemic resilience. Relevant studies indicate that the traditional fragmented governance model cannot cope with climate change. The professor put forward the concept of integrated water resources management. He also highlighted the AQUAPOLO water reuse project, which promotes water recycling through MBR and reverse osmosis technologies, and has established an urban water security decision support system integrated with climate forecasting.
After the lecture, Professor Marcelo visited the laboratories of the research group.
