At the invitation of the School of Computer and Electronic Information, Professor Xiaojun Wu, Dean of the Research Institute of Jiangnan University, gave an academic talk on "Multimodal Image Fusion and Deep Learning" in Mingli Building 109 at 4:00 pm on March 31, 2021.This academic report was presided over by Professor Genlin Ji, Dean of the School of Computer and Electronic Information. Some teachers and postgraduate students of our college participated in the report meeting.

Xiaojun Wu, Dean of the Research Institute of Jiangnan University, a second-level professor and doctoral supervisor, engaged in research on pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. He presided over many researches including IEEE Smart City International Cooperation Projects, Advanced Research Fund Project of Equipment Development Department, Key International Cooperation Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Joint Fund Key Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key R&D Project and Major Scientific Research Project of Ministry of Education，etc. He was awarded The Talents of New Century of the Ministry of Education in 2006 and the Second-level Talents of Jiangsu 333 Project. Wu has published more than 300 academic papers at home and abroad, including more than 120 SCI papers and more than 100 EI papers. Also he published 5 academic books (including one English monograph, published by CRC). The research achievements have won 6 awards above the provincial and ministerial level, including AMDO International Conference Best Paper Award, IETE Gowri Memorial Award, and the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Ministry of Education. His collaborator, Academician Josef Kittler, has won the international science and Technology Cooperation Award of Jiangsu Science and Technology Award in 2015 and the Friendship Award of the Chinese government in 2016.He presided over the MOOC English Course "Introduction to smart city", National Excellent Course "Introduction to artificial intelligence" and national bilingual demonstration course "artificial intelligence". He was the person in charge of the construction of national characteristic specialty and national first-class specialty of computer science and technology, as well as the person in charge of the scientific and technological innovation team of universities in Jiangsu Province. He has studied and made academic visits in Britain, France, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Besides, he has served as the chairman and the reporter of many international and domestic academic conferences.

Deep learning has been widely used in many fields and has achieved good results. The main content of this report is image fusion based on deep learning. Firstly, he carried out a brief review of deep learning and image/video fusion with information fusion as the background; then he gave the principle of image fusion based on deep learning. On this basis, the application of image fusion in image quality enhancement, face feature point location and recognition, target tracking and face depth deception is given from three levels——pixel level, feature level and decision level.

Wu is humorous and scientifically rigorous. The atmosphere of the whole lecture was warm, which greatly broadened the scientific horizons of teachers and students, and both teachers and students benefited a lot. After the academic report, Professor Wu had a warm academic exchange with the teachers and students present, and the report was successfully concluded with warm applause.
