Invited Talk of Prof. Xizhao Wang from Shenzhen University
Professor Xizhao Wang was invited to give a talk in our school on Dec. 1, 2019. He is a professor of Shenzhen University. The title of his talk is "Pros and Cons of Deep Learning". The talk was presided over by Prof. Ming Yang.
In the talk, Prof. Wang firstly introduced the successful cases of deep learning in the fields of face recognition, speech recognition, machine translation, human-machine games. Then he emphasized the limitations of deep learning, such as the disappearance of gradients, the inability to determine the depth of the network, and the heavy reliance on big data. Later, Prof. Wang combined research directions with practical issues and reported on some of the funding projects that their team has already undertaken. In response to the upsurge of deep learning, Prof. Wang proposed cold thinking under the hot development, and pointed out the further research and development direction of deep learning.
Prof. Wang was humorous, scientific and rigorous. The academic atmosphere of this talk was very strong. After the talk, Prof. Wang had a warm academic exchange with teachers and students.
In addition, Prof. Wang provided detailed suggestions and guidance for the discipline construction of the school.
