Professor Guihai Chen, Nanjing University, gave a talk entitled " Future Technologies of Data Centers " at the School of Computer and Electronic Information on Dec. 3, 2021. The academic presentation was hosted by Professor Genlin Ji, Dean of the School of Computer and Electronic Information.

Chen is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Nanjing University and a fellow of CCF. His main research is distributed network and data processing, including future network systems and protocols, wireless network structure and optimization, Internet of Things and sensor networks, new computer architecture, data center core technology, data analysis and processing, etc. He has published more than 600 papers. Google Scholar has cited more than 17,000 times, and a single paper has been cited more than 1,400 times. He has won the International Conference Paper Award 11 times and various awards, the 2008 National Science Fund for Outstanding Youth, the 2015 Ministry of Education Natural Science First Prize, the first prize of Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Award in 2018.

With the development of cloud computing, IoT and big data, data centers are becoming more and more important. Governments, enterprises and universities are paying more and more attention, and compete in building large scale data centers. However, on the other end of the spectrum, overbuilding of large data centers is largely occupying our living area and further affecting our living environment. It is high time to consider the size problem of data centers. In this talk, we first recall the history of computer architecture, and then list the novel technologies for the future of data centers. We believe that data centers will be smaller and smaller, although they are becoming larger and larger nowadays.
