[Invited Talk] Professor Lili Niu from Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology,Chinese Academy of Sciences

Professor Lili Niu, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced TechnologyChinese Academy of Sciences, gave a talk entitled " Ultrasound neuromodulation technology and application " at the School of Computer and Electronic Information on Nov. 12, 2021. The academic presentation was hosted by Professor Qingyu Ma, Associate Dean of the School of Computer and Electronic Information.

 

Professor Niu is mainly engaged in ultrasound neuromodulation technology and application research. She develops noninvasive neuromodulation technology based on ultrasound radiation force. She designs a new type of ultrasound neuromodulation technology system, which broadens the application of medical ultrasound technology in neuroscience clinical. She has published more than 50 papers and 6 cover articles in international authoritative journals such as IEEE Trans and Advanced Science, 23 authorized invention patents..

 

Professor Niu first introduced a cross-scale, dynamic and multi-focus ultrasound neuromodulation device, covering multiple levels of cell, small animal, and primate research. She then combined ultrasound radiation force and mechanically sensitive ion channels in neurons activated mechanically sensitive ion channels through ultrasound stimulation to precisely control the excitability of neurons. Finally, she introduced the experimental results of their laboratory on magnetically guided ultrasound stimulation of non-human primates. The prefrontal cortex was stimulated by ultrasound, and magnetic resonance was used. Functional imaging found that related brain areas can be activated by ultrasound. The research results prove that ultrasound activates neurons and transmits signals to related functional brain areas. Non-invasive ultrasound brain stimulation and neuromodulation technology provide new ideas for brain science research and brain disease treatment.
