[Invited Talk] Professor Yang Ran from Jinan University

Professor Yang Ran from Jinan University gave an academic report titled Fibre-Optic Medical Detecting Technology: From Ex Vivo to In Vivo in Room 402, Mingli Building, Xianlin Campus, on Oct 30, 2025 at 15:00 pm. Professor Yiping Wang hosted the report.

For optical tumour theranostics, effective photon delivery to deep-seated tumours is crucial. Optical fibres serve as a direct and minimally invasive conduit, enabling precise light administration to target sites. Professor Yang Ran highlighted both ongoing challenges and opportunities in this field. The talk first introduced fibre-optic sensing platforms for biomarkerssuch as pH, proteins, and nucleic acidsproviding new avenues for accurate point-of-care testing (POCT). It then explored strategies to improve the integration of fibre-optic theranostic technologies, presenting novel multifunctional fibre probes that combine diagnosis and therapy. These probes allow targeted drug delivery while facilitating real-time, in situ monitoring of treatment. Finally, the discussion addressed key issues in incorporating fibre-optic theranostics into current clinical practice.

The seminar fostered a dynamic and stimulating academic environment. With his clear logic and engaging delivery, Professor Yang Ran captivated the audience. During the Q&A session, faculty and students raised thoughtful questions concerning the technical development, application prospects, and commercialization pathways of fiber-optic sensing platforms. Professor Ran addressed each query with insightful answers based on his deep expertise, prompting a productive and lively exchange.

 

Short Bio:

Yang Ran is a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Jinan University, and serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of Photonics Technology. He has been recognized through several prestigious talent programs, including the Guangdong Special Support Program for Young Top Talents, the Pearl River Science and Technology Nova Program, the Jinan University Elite Talent Scheme, and the universitys inaugural Distinguished Faculty cultivation initiative. His research centers on optical fiber sensing, biomedical applications, and interdisciplinary areas. Professor Ran has led more than 10 research projects, including a Key Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has authored over 80 science citation indexed (SCI) papers in high impact factor journals such as Nature Communications, Light: Science & Applications, Nature Nanotechnology, Advanced Science, Advanced Fiber Materials, Chemical Engineering Journal, and Biosensors and Bioelectronics. His publications have accumulated over 2,500 citations, with an H-index of 30. He also holds 8 authorized national invention patents and has delivered more than 20 invited talks at leading international and domestic conferences. In addition, he was honored as an Outstanding Young Researcher in Optical Fiber Sensing by the Chinese Society of Optical Engineering.
