Welcome to the Forum

High-quality early childhood educators are the key to quality programs for children. With the transformation of early childhood education system and the reform of higher education system, early childhood teacher preparation programs are facing many challenges. It is our goal to create more effective teacher education systems that foster educators who would make strong commitment to high quality early childhood education. International Forum on Excellence in Early Childhood Teacher Education will provide an arena for the global community to continue the discourse on transforming early childhood teacher education systems. Department of Early Childhood Education in NJNU

The history of Department of Early Childhood Education in Nanjing Normal University can be traced back to 1943, when Mr Chen Heqin established the first National Preschool Teachers College. In 1952, Nanjing Teachers College was established and the first independent Department of Early Childhood Education was formed on the basis of Department of Child Welfare in previous Jinling Women’s College. As the president of Nanjing Normal College and also the director of Department of Early Childhood Education, Mr. Chen Heqin created three-level-education system: kindergarten affiliated to the college—Early Childhood Education College—Department of Early Childhood Education in teachers college. Moreover, he created a laboratory and a small factory of children’s toys and instructional tools which had great applications in teaching and research, as well as having a ready market in South East Asia. After 1960s, Department of Early Childhood Education became one of the teaching and research centers of Faculty of Education. In 1996, the center was renamed Department of Early Childhood Education when School of Education Science was established in Nanjing Normal University. In 1986, the department started to offer program of Master of Early Childhood Education. In 1993, the department was authorized to confer Doctor of Early Childhood Education by the State Council, making it the first doctoral program in early childhood education national wide. In 2002 and 2007, the discipline of early childhood education was accorded national key discipline status for two consecutive years. In 2014, our program entitled “The Journey of Following Heqin: Preparation of Research-Friendly Preschool Teachers” was selected by the Ministry of Education to be listed in the “Projects of Reform on Preschool Education Teacher Preparation: Achieving Excellence”. In 2015, we are awarded the “Flagship Major” by the Department of Education, Jiangsu Provincial Government. In 2016, our lab kindergarten named after Chen Heqin has been established, which will be our research and training base. 

Professor Yongping Yu, M.Ed., college dean, doctoral supervisor. His researches mainly focus on Early Childhood Education Curriculum, Environment and Child Development, Early Childhood Education Policy and Administration.

Professor Rongfang Gu, Ph.D., department director, doctoral supervisor. Her researches mainly focus on preschool children's hygiene and health education, and early childhood teacher education.
