On November 12, 2025, Professor Zhu Miao from Shanghai Jiao Tong University was invited to deliver a special report titled "Personal Insights on Academic Career Development and Grant Applications" for young faculty members of our school.     Professor Zhu Miao is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a National Leading Talent in Technological Innovation. He primarily focuses on research in DC grids and the integration of renewable energy via DC systems, has led several major national-level research projects, and has a prolific academic record.

In his report, Zhu Miao first reviewed the history of the modern university system and the reforms related to the "Tenure-Track" system in China. Using the "talent pyramid" structure implemented at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his own career progression as examples, he systematically elaborated on the growth trajectories and challenges within the long-term appointment system. Addressing the pressures inherent in such systems, he quoted the saying "With lofty realms, one naturally achieves excellence," emphasizing the importance of maintaining academic passion, balancing KPIs with the pursuit of research excellence, and the significance of fostering healthy supervisor-student relationships. He also encouraged young faculty to actively contribute to the collective and find fulfillment through service.

In the section on grant applications, Professor Zhu stressed the necessity of having the "determination to fight with one's back against the river." He systematically explained that the innovativeness of "Basic Research" is reflected in new theories, new methods, or advancements upon previous work. He noted that the project title must be "accurate, concise, and innovative," and the research plan should highlight feasibility, demonstrating that the applicant is the right person to undertake the project.

Finally, Professor Zhu emphasized that true "luck" in grant review stems from relentless effort and a solid foundation. Concluding the report, which blended institutional insights with practical experience, he wished the attendees immediate success in their endeavors.
