For the invitation of associate professor Shaogui Yang, Prof. Xie Quan from Dalian University of Technology visited School of Environment, Nanjing Normal University, for the academic speech on “Application principle of electrochemical technology in water pollution control”. The presentation was hold in Meeting Room 401 on July 19, 2019. More than 40 students and teachers attended the seminar which was hosted by Prof. Shaogui Yang.
Prof. Xie Quan is a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, a Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars, a member of the State Council's Discipline Review Group, and a second prize winner of the National Natural Science Award. He is mainly engaged in the basics and technical research of pollution control chemical engineering. He won one second prize of the National Natural Science Award, five provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, obtained more than 60 invention patents and published more than 400 SCI papers.
Prof. Xie Quan talked about the challenges faced by water and wastewater treatment, and explained the current status and hazards of emerging pollutants, indicating that traditional A/O processes cannot effectively remove toxicity. Furthermore, the application prospect of electrochemical technology in removing persistent toxic pollutants (PTS) in water was proposed. The dehalogenation from electrochemical reduction, electric Fenton reaction, electrochemical anode and cathode enhanced adsorption and electrochemical coupling membrane separation technology were introduced in detail. The report included the reduction of the cathode by N-doped diamond, CO2 reduction by boron-nitrogen co-doped diamond electrode, and electric Fenton reaction to increase H2O2 yield. The MOF electrode increased H2O2 yield and efficiently degraded perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Removal of humic acid (HA) by electrochemically coupled membrane separation techniques. The sterilization efficiency can reach 100%, which can solve the problem of membrane fouling, and the energy consumption of separation from the conventional membrane was reduced by 15%.
Prof. Xie Quan interpreted complex scientific research problems in an easy-to-understand language, and the wonderful report was received applause from the teachers and students. Subsequently, Prof. Xie Quan discussed the application prospects of electrochemistry and photocatalysis, the bottleneck of electrochemistry, the future development direction, material design, economic cost, scientific research spirit and student training with teachers and students. The teachers and students present at the scene have gained a lot and benefited a lot.
