Mission

To inspire geographic teaching, learning, and studying while engaging in the pursuit of geographic knowledge, and to apply this knowledge toward understanding the ever-changing interaction of human societies and physical environments.

 

History

School of Geography Science at The Nanjing Normal University has endeavored to achieve a high level of academic excellence for more than 90 years. The College was part of the History Department of Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1919 and became independent as the Department of Geography in 1952 when the famous geologist, Professor Li Xudan was transferred over. In June 1997, the first School of Geography Science in China nation was set up after adjustment and reform of the Department. Today, we proudly offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of areas related to the discipline of Geography.

The School of Geographical Sciences at NJNU is recognized as one of the Top 5 geography departments in the nation. We’ve earned that distinction by:

·         Offering a diverse and challenging curriculum with seven departments of specialization

·         Employing nation-renowned faculty and researchers to guide our work

·         Engaging students at the graduate and undergraduate level in hands-on study and field work that translates into practical experience

 

Currently, the School of Geographical Sciences has developed comprehensive programs covering all geographical sciences with seven departments: Department of Geography, Department of Tourism, Department of Land Management, Department of Geographic Information Systems, Department of Surveying and Mapping, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and Department of Marine Studies. Affiliated to the School of Geographical Sciences are the Key Laboratory of Virtual Geographic Environment for the Ministry of Education, Environmental Change and Ecological Development Laboratory for Jiangsu Province, Center for Comprehensive Marine Development and Environmental Engineering in Jiangsu Province, Institute of Development Planning for Jiangsu Province and Institute of Regional Economy and Planning, and Institute of Environmental Science at Nanjing Normal University.
