Journalism and communication education in Nanjing Normal University started in 1964 and has gone through half a century. In June 1964, the Ministry of Education approved the Publicity Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and agreed to add journalism major in Nanjing Normal University, which was the first non-normal major in NNU after the founding of New China. When the national college entrance examination was resumed in 1977, Nanjing Normal University enrolled 40 students majoring in journalism under the direct leadership of the Publicity Department of the Provincial Party Committee and jointly managed by Xinhua Daily and the university. The school was responsible for the theoretical courses and the Xinhua Daily was responsible for the assignment of class teachers and practical courses. Since 1984, under the direct intervention of the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Party Committee, journalism major resumed continuous enrollment. In May 1990, the Publicity Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee established Jiangsu News Talent Training Center in Nanjing Normal University. In April 1995, the School of Journalism and Communication was formally established on the basis of the major of Journalism and the Department of Electronic Education in Nanjing Normal University. In July 2017, the Publicity Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee signed an agreement with Nanjing Normal University to jointly build the School of Journalism and Communication.

The college has strong professional strength and three national first-class professional construction sites. The college has four departments: Journalism Department, Radio and Television Department, Advertising Department, and Network and New Media Department. It recruits undergraduate students majoring in journalism, radio and television editing and directing, advertising, network and new media, among which journalism is one of the first national characteristic majors, national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and Jiangsu brand major. The major of Radio and television editing and Directing is a national first-class undergraduate major and a brand major of Jiangsu Province. The major of Network and New media is a national first-class undergraduate major.

The school has one doctoral program, two academic master's programs and two professional master's programs, including one first-level doctoral program in Journalism and Communication, one first-level master's program in Journalism and Communication, one Master's program in Drama and Film and Television (Radio and Television Art), one Master's program in Journalism and Communication (MJC) and one Master's program in Radio and Television (MFA). Since 2001, journalism has been selected as the key discipline of Jiangsu Province. In 2018, journalism and communication was selected as the superior discipline of universities in Jiangsu Province.

The faculty structure of the college is reasonable, and there are 82 faculty members, including 64 full-time teachers, 20 professors (researchers), 25 associate professors, 13 doctoral supervisors and 20 master supervisors. It has 1 leading talent in philosophy and social science of national Major Talent Program, 1 "Annual Figure of National University Counselor", 3 young and middle-aged leading talents of Jiangsu Province "333 Project", 1 famous teaching teacher of Jiangsu Province, 1 outstanding talent of social science of Jiangsu Province, 3 young talents of social science of Jiangsu Province, 1 leading talent of Press and Publication of Jiangsu Province, 1 leading talent of Network audio-visual of Jiangsu Province. There are 1 Young Network Audio-visual talents in Jiangsu Province, 12 "Doctors of Entrepreneurship and Innovation" in Jiangsu Province, 1 winner of "May 4th Youth Medal" in Jiangsu Province, 2 excellent teaching teams of "Qinglan Project" in Jiangsu Province, 2 young and middle-aged academic leaders and 2 young key teachers.

The college has obvious scientific research characteristics, and has formed characteristic directions such as smart media communication and social governance, news communication history, media laws and ethics, public opinion and social governance, image production and communication, cultural industry and communication. The college has published "Literature Series of Public Opinion and Social Governance", "Literature Series of News and Communication History", "Literature Series of New Time and Space of Film and television Communication", "Contemporary Media and Society", "Literature Series of Information Communication and Social Development", "News and Communication Science Application Series", "Contemporary Media News Practice series", "Radio, Film and Television Communication Art and Technology series", "Radio, film and Television Art series" Edited and directed series ", "Photography Art Series" and other series. Published the first batch of our country's news communication field curriculum ideological and political case collection "News Communication Curriculum Ideological and Political case".


The college has research institutions such as the Research Center of Marxist News View, the Research Center of Media and Social Development, the Research Center of Public Opinion and Social Governance, and the Institute of Republican Journalism. Jiangsu News Personnel Training Center and Jiangsu Party Committee and Government spokesman Training base are attached to our hospital. Our hospital is the president unit of the Media Regulation and Ethics Research Society of China Society of News History and the president unit of Jiangsu Science, Education, Film and Television Association.

The Media Experimental Center is the Experimental teaching Demonstration Center of Jiangsu Province, and the laboratory of characteristic and advantage disciplines of universities jointly built by the central and local government. It has a room area of 2800 square meters, and has digital high-definition studio, electronic news gathering and editing laboratory, media integration laboratory and other laboratories.

Since the "13th Five-Year Plan", the school has won one Outstanding Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province and one Graduate Education Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province. He has won 15 awards, including 3 first prizes and 6 second prizes, such as the Outstanding Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangsu Province and the Outstanding Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education. It has undertaken 27 projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including 4 major projects and 3 key projects. It has undertaken 1 major project of Social Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province and 37 other provincial and ministerial projects.

In recent years, the school has carried out abundant scientific research activities and a strong academic atmosphere. It has successively held the academic seminar on Media and Rural social development, the high-level Forum on the history of Journalism in the Republic of China, the academic seminar on Media Laws and Ethics, and the Forum for postgraduates of Media Discipline in Jiangsu Province, and organized a series of academic exchanges. The "Media Forum with the Garden" composed of academic experts, the "Media View" launched by the industry elite, the "Academic salon for truth-seeking teachers" and the "Salon for good students", etc.

Since the establishment of the journalism and communication education in Nanjing Normal University for half a century, more than ten thousand people at all levels of the society have been educated. At present, there are 1308 students, including 517 master's degree students and 38 Doctor's degree students. There are 24 foreign students and 65 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The college adheres to the guidance of the Marxist news concept, centering on the main line of the development of the school's cause, constantly integrating resources, consolidating connotation, seizing opportunities, adhering to the truth-seeking and pragmatic development, adhering to the simultaneous development of teaching, and persisting in pioneering and innovating for development.
