To Spread Love Media Forum (No.78): Professor Bian Donglei Shared "Historical Analysis of Communication: Using 'Reading' as a Method"

On the evening of February 19th, Mr. Bian Donglei, an associate professor at the School of Journalism and Communication of Nanjing University and a visiting scholar at the School of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, brought us a themed academic lecture: Historical Analysis of Communication With the Method of Reading, in the classroom 408 of Xinchuan Building. The lecture was hosted by Professor Yu Deshan.
At the beginning of the lecture, Mr.Bian explored the significance of history as experience, thinking and writing from the perspective of studying the old history in the new media era. He introduced the concepts of career history, communication history, media history, concept history and cultural history to students. Besides, he pointed out that he has studied the history of journalism and communication from description, subject specificity, and insight.
Later, Mr.Bian cut through the problem of reading history and introduced the transition from book history to reading history, the legitimacy of "newspaper" reading history, the change of research objects from newspaper texts to reading practice, rough division of problems, and diary, letters, memorials and other historical materials. Secondly, he clarified the article writing, theory and problems in his research. Finally, he explained the framework of the introduction, access to news, talking about the country, affectionate country, and epilogue, using The Year of" China": News, Reading and Everyday Nation-State (1894-1895) as an example. Ten key moments about "reading" and modern Chinese history were emphasized, and reflections in research were proposed.
In addition, Mr.Bian Donglei especially emphasized that for the majority of graduate students, it is not difficult to ask questions when doing research, but the key is to find out the academic context in which the question is located for in-depth analysis, and to raise the problem from a micro level to the meso level. This will not only facilitate the writing of the literature review, but also improve the academic nature of the research topic.
