【Academic Report】Domestic Dogs on the Advance: From Behavioral Evolution to Disease Models

On April 1, 2025, at the invitation of the College of Life Sciences, Nanjing Normal University, Researcher Wang Guodong from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered an academic report titled "Domestic Dogs on the Advance: From Behavioral Evolution to Disease Models" at Xingzhi Building, Xianlin Campus of Nanjing Normal University. Faculty members and postgraduate students from the College of Life Sciences attended this academic report, which was presided over by Professor Xu Shixia from the Institute of Zoology of the College of Life Sciences.

During this report, Researcher Wang Guodong presented a report on the origin, adaptive evolution, and genetic mechanisms of complex traits of canines. Finally, he also introduced the construction methods of domestic dogs as human disease models. He stated that as a domesticated subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus), during the global migration with humans, domestic dogs have not only adapted to various natural environments ranging from the polar regions to the tropics but have also evolved into more than 400 breeds under continuous artificial selection, exhibiting the most abundant morphological, physiological, and behavioral diversity among mammals. This evolutionary process under the dual influence of natural and artificial selection has made domestic dogs one of the ideal biological models for analyzing the mechanisms of adaptive evolution.

Researcher Wang Guodong's explanations were simple and easy to understand. After the report, he had a lively communication and interaction with the on-site teachers and students, carefully answering their questions. The atmosphere at the scene was vibrant, and the teachers and students who attended the academic report all expressed that they had benefited a great deal.
