【Academic Report】The 105th "Chen Bangjie Forum": Pathogen Ecology of Wildlife Diseases
On the afternoon of December 23, 2025, the 105th session of the "Chen Bangjie Forum" was successfully held in the circular conference room on the third floor of Xingzhi Building. At the invitation of Professor Xu Shixia from the School of Life Sciences at Nanjing Normal University, Professor Xu Yifei, an Overseas Outstanding Young Scholar from the School of Public Health at Shandong University, Young Expert of the Taishan Scholars Program, and doctoral supervisor, visited for an exchange. Professor Xu delivered an excellent academic report titled "Pathogen Ecology of Wildlife Diseases" for the faculty and students. The report was chaired by Professor Xu Shixia and was enthusiastically attended by teachers and students from the school.

During the report, Professor Xu Yifei systematically introduced the cross-species transmission and pathogenic mechanisms of pathogens in insectivorous mammals. He focused on elucidating the microbial diversity of insectivores on a global scale. Through extensive data mining, he constructed the most comprehensive microbial map of insectivores to date, establishing them as a significant pathogen reservoir. He analyzed the cross-species transmission of microbes from insectivores and their associated public health risks, finding that insectivores serve as one of the hubs for virus transmission among wild mammals and predicting that their transmission risk will surpass that of bats and rodents in many regions. Furthermore, he revealed the intra-host evolutionary dynamics and pathogenic mechanisms of the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV): severe cases are driven by variants with high replication efficiency, while mild cases are dominated by immune escape mutations. Professor Xu concluded by affirming that insectivores are an emerging group of reservoir animals for epidemics. The report content was cutting-edge, substantial, logically clear, and highly inspiring.

After the report, Professor Xu Yifei actively interacted with the attending faculty and students. Participants asked questions on frontier topics such as pathogen detection technology, cross-species pathogen transmission, and pathogen surveillance and early warning. Professor Xu provided detailed answers based on specific cases and practical experience, creating a lively atmosphere for discussion.
