The school of music was proud to present the 15th seminar of famous musicians in Jiangsu series, entitled “The Research of the Western Music History” by Dr. Guozhong Sun. The seminar was on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 14:00-16:00 at Chen Hong Concert Hall in Nanjing Normal University.
Dr. Sun opened the seminar with the discussion of the musicology. He mentioned that because of different research topics, the musicology can be divided into the historical musicology, the systematic musicology, and the comparative musicology. The research topics of historical musicology include events, composers' works, musicians, music styles, autograph, and manuscripts. The systematic musicology contains researches in aesthetic, education, theory, society, and acoustic. The comparative musicology is also called the ethnomusicology or the world music. There are three steps of doing the research: choosing a topic, reading articles, and creating the questions. Dr. Sun provided the audiences with several examples of research topic, such as “late style,” “absolute music,” “monumentality,” and “biography.” Also, he suggested that writing the annotated bibliography is an efficient way to organize and understand the numerous references. Moreover, creating the questions aids the researchers to stay on the right track.
At the end of the seminar, there was a discussion section. Dr. Sun not only answered the questions, but also provided a reading list for all audiences. Dr. Sun encouraged all students to open the vision and have a long-term target. Moreover, facing the new perspective, one should try to understand it comprehensively before rejecting. Like science, every argument should be supported with the reliable references and evidences. Otherwise, it will become an opinions, and it cannot be included in the research works.
