The school of music was proud to present the 35th seminar of famous musicians in Jiangsu series, entitled “The Research of Acoustics Poem--based on the quality and the structure of acoustics in the works of Wagner and Brahms” by Dr. Zhongen Han. The seminar was on October 11, 2019, 9:30am at Chen Hong Concert Hall in Nanjing Normal University.
Dr. Han earned his doctoral degree at Central conservatory of Music, and currently served in Shanghai conservatory of Music. He published numerous articles in several significant journals, such as Music Aesthetic, Music Philosophy, Music Anthropology, Contemporary Music Research, and so on.?
Dr. Han opened the seminar with his recently research in aesthetics with contemporary music. He indicated that listening and speaking are the key words of music aesthetic. To analyze, discuss, and review music, one should emphasize on the theme of music, describe the music with the words of musicology and aesthetic, and read the score in detail. Dr. Han divided the topic into five aspects: 1. the quality and the structure of sounds, 2. the energy and the force of sounds, 3. the meaning, rhetoric, to narration of sounds, 4. the image, logic, to abstract of sounds, and 5. the acoustic and the sense. He applies Brahms’s First Symphony and Wagner’s Tristan?und Isolde as examples to discuss above aspects, including the chord progressions, the application of harmony, the tension of the music, and the directions of the melodies. Moreover, he explained the techniques of composition that composers altered the atmosphere or created the anxiety emotion in music by changing only one note.?
At the end of the seminar, Dr. Han encouraged students to observe the sense of feeling while listening music. Through observing, one should be able to discover the beauty of sounds. The seminar not only included the discussion of the music aesthetics but also referred to philosophy, which provided students with a whole new view to listen and analyze music.
