【NanGaoShi·Physics Seminar】Professor Peirong Li--“Progress on Charmed Baryon Studies at the BESIII Experiment”
The “NanGaoShi·Physics Seminar” series lectures hosted by the School of Physics Science and Technology of Nanjing Normal University were successfully held on June 5, 2026, in Room 437, Xingjian Building. We were honored to invite Professor Peirong Li from Lanzhou University to give an academic lecture entitled “Progress on Charmed Baryon Studies at the BESIII Experiment”. The lecture was chaired by Professor Kai Yi from the School of Physics Science and Technology, and was attended by faculty members and graduate students in particle physics–related fields.
In the report, Professor Peirong Li first reviewed the discovery history of baryons containing a charm quark — charmed baryons — systematically going over the many members of this family and clearly presenting the overall landscape of charmed baryon spectroscopy. He then gave a detailed introduction to the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II (BEPCII) and the third-generation Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) detector, emphasizing that the BESIII experiment has accumulated high-statistics data at center-of-mass energies above 4.6 GeV, providing uniquely favorable conditions for systematic studies of charmed baryon properties and leading to a number of important physics results with leading international impact. These results focus on core research directions such as semi-leptonic decays, hadronic decay rates, polarization and CP, and hyperon spectroscopy.
At the end of the report, Professor Peirong Li also presented the future data-taking plan and the upgrade plan for BEPCII, which will open up broader prospects for charmed baryon physics and strong interaction studies. After the presentation, faculty and students actively raised questions regarding the content discussed. Professor Peirong Li provided detailed responses to each query, leaving the audience greatly inspired.
Peirong Li --- Profile
Peirong Li, a professor at Lanzhou University. He received his Ph.D. in Science from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2016. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the China Center of Advanced Science and Technology. Since 2018, he has been appointed as a research fellow and professor at Lanzhou University. He has long been dedicated to experimentally studying the fundamental structure of particles and their interactions. Relying on the BESII experiment at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider and the LHCb experiment at CERN, he has achieved a series of research results in the production and decay properties of charmed baryons and in hadron spectroscopy. He has received the "Most Influential Paper Award" from the Chinese Physical Society, the "One Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the "Chenguang Cup" Excellent Paper Award from the High Energy Physics Division of the Chinese Physical Society. He serves as the principal investigator of a project under the Key Special Project for Large Scientific Facilities of the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and has been supported by the Excellent Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
