The 10th Phase of “Gao Juefu Psychological lectures”: Well-known psychologists from Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced the forefront of psychological research

 

On the afternoon of July 18, 2017, the 10th Phase of “Gao Juefu Psychological lectures” was held in Nanjing Normal University. Three well-known experts gave three brilliant reports respectively. The experts are, according to the chronological order of the reportS, Chen Xuefeng, deputy director of the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Fu Xiaolan, director of the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of the Department of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the seventh session of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, member of the Chinese Psychological Society; Zhang Kan, former director of the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former director of the Chinese Psychological Society, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing Countries, member of the International Council for Science (ICSU) Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Committee (Asia Pacific Committee member, vice chairman of the Chinese committee), executive director of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA). The series of academic activities was hosted by Prof. Fu Hong, dean of the School of Psychology. Prof. Guo Benyu, Prof. Yu Jiayuan, Prof. Deng Zhu, associated Prof. Chen Qingrong and other teachers and students participated in the lecture.

 

After Prof. Fu introduced the experts, Prof. Chen Xuefeng gave the special report entitled "from the brain plan to see the development of brain science”. She pointed out that brain science would bring about changes in psychology in four aspects: technical approach, research paradigm, experimental design and research problem. Then, she explained the brain science programs in seven countries and regions in detail, including the United States, Europe and China to introduce the support and imminent changes of brain science. She said that a lot of brain science studies have been done in the past, but this is only the rehearsal. More teachers and students are encouraged to seize the opportunity to devote themselves to the brain science and clinical research. In the questioning session, Prof. Deng asked how students could enter the psychological research teams. Prof. Chen expressed warm welcome to students of Nanjing Normal University, and provided multiple relevant information. Associated Prof. Chen Qingrong asked the scarcity of research in the high level of cognitive research of brain science. Prof. Chen endorsed his point of view, and also hoped that Chinese researchers in the area of psychology fight for more resources in Brain science projects and made a louder voice.

 

Taking American TV series "Lie to me" as an example, Prof. Fu Xiaolan introduced the universal utilize of micro-expression in the field of polygraph and daily life. She raised her own research questions: "how long will the micro-expression last?" "Can it be self-perceived?" "Is it involved with the whole or part of the facial muscles?" "Can humans recognize the micro-expression of others?" In the view of these four issues, Prof. Fu respectively described her experimental designs and results of a number of studies. Finally, she introduced the latest applications of micro-expression, such as the treatment of social contact injury in schizophrenia and the way to improve the effectiveness of speech in political psychology. Teachers and students asked a lot of questions from many aspects. Prof. Fu made detailed and in-depth responses to the questions. She also pointed out the significance of micro-expression research in exploring human science.

 

After two wonderful presentations, Associated Prof. Chen Qingrong and Dr. Xu Wei brought two brilliant reports respectively. Prof. Cheng made a particular report about his recent article "Cognitive Neural Mechanisms of Rhyme and Poetic Understanding in Chinese Ancient Poetry Reading." He explained the origin of the study, questions and assumptions, experimental design, experimental results and conclusions. Delicate and rich culture of the research progresses surprised all teachers and students. Then, Dr. Xu came to bring about his mindfulness guidance. He invited teachers and students to perceive and observe their breath and sounds around them. He also answered the doubts and questions teachers and students put forward.

 

Prof. Zhang Kan brought a lecture about the "opportunities and challenges of Chinese psychology". As a psychologist with international influence, Prof. Zhang analyzed the influence of psychology in the world, especially the development and history of psychology in China, from the perspective of national investment, the publication of papers and the influence of psychology journals. He elaborated 125 major issues published in Science, and selected some of them which were related to the area of psychology, such as the biological basis of consciousness, why the development of language has critical period? How to develop human cooperation behavior? How to store and restore memories? In the process of great renaissance of the China, psychology should focus on the areas of brilliant future, such as the psychological crisis of public emergencies, the elderly psychological basis research and service practice. Prof. Zhang shared a lot of his own research experiences in this process. His humor and wisdom attracted audiences’ laughter and thought.

 

The wonderful and detailed presentations of three psychologists and excellent performance of our young teachers benefited all the professors and students.
