School of Chinese Language and Literature is the backbone of the Nanjing Normal University, the southeast city of China's higher education in the liberal arts. It is also an important base of humanities and academic scientific research. Its development experienced throughout the 20th century, with a long history and fine traditions, advanced educational philosophy, broad human spirit, a good style of study, innovative mechanisms, first-class teachers, rich teaching and scientific research. It also ranks with the key disciplines of national "Project 211"  and has a high international reputation. According to incomplete statistics, from 1952 to 2001, School of Chinese Language and Literature has trained more than 15,000 senior talents. Outstanding graduates work on education, literature, art, research, journalism, publishing, economic and political fronts, giving full play to the role of the backbone of Chinese socialist material civilization and spiritual civilization construction.

  

 

1902- 1976

In 1902, Sanjiang Normal College was established, which was the predecessor of Nanjing Normal University and became Liangjiang Excellent Normal College in 1905. At that time, the traditional Chinese culture (JingXue, XiaoXue, etc.) lived in the dominant position in teaching subjects. Afterwards, Liangjiang Excellent Normal College evolved into Southeast University (1921), Central University (1928) and Nanjing University (1952). Chinese language and literature have always been the key disciplines of the school and become Chinese Department with independent institution established. Finally, it. becomes School of Chinese Language and Literature. After the liberation of Nanjing, the government took over the Private University of Nanking and renamed it to be "Public University of Nanking." In 1951, the original Ginling Wenli College was incorporated into “Gong Li Jin Da”. Three colleges including arts, science and agriculture ware set. In the School of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Chinese Language is the key faculty.

In fact, School of Chinese Language and Literature was also known as "Jin Da Ning Bu" because it addressed at No.122, Ninghai Road (now Suiyuan campus, Nanjing Normal University). In 1952, as the result of the nationwide adjustment of higher education, some schools and departments of Nanjing University and Ginling University were separated from the former universities and merged into Nanjing Normal College which was set up on the former site of the Ginling Women University. Chinese language and Literature Department (the Department of Chinese) was established, which was the direct predecessor of School of Chinese Language and Literature, Nanjing Normal University nowadays.

In the start-up phase, there were only seven faculty members: Professor Sun Wang (Head), Professor Xu Fu, Associate Professor Liu Kairong, Lecturer Bing Yang, Assistant Zhang Wenqian, Secretary Zhang Shudong and so on.

 

1977-1990

Department of Chinese second rapid development adapted to the reform and opening-up policy and targeted at strengthening the faculties of modernization, specifically in the following eight areas:

1.Establish non-normal professional

2. Use a variety of forms of education to meet meet the community's urgent need for higher education

3. Enhance the educational quality to train senior personnel

4. Strengthen teaching and research mechanism, establish institute and academic journals, greatly enhance the teaching and research

5. Establish teacher echelon construction, train young teachers

6. Strengthen teaching and academic exchanges at home and abroad

7. Implement modern teaching methods, improve teaching and service system

8. Strengthen ideological education, improve the management system, strict teaching order

 

1991-2001

In the 1990s, School of Chinese Language and Literature entered the third period of great development.

With the Nanjing Normal University entering the ranks of the " Project 211", Chinese Department upgraded to College in 1997. The whole college worked together to seize this historic opportunity for development and made a series of important results.

1.Discipline construction making breakthrough progress

Before 1998, School of Chinese Language and Literature only had one doctoral program, Chinese classical literature, which was built up in 1981 under the leadership of Tang Guizhang. Since entering the "Project 211", the college has improved a number of academic leaders. In this context, the College set a doctoral program of Literature and Art and a master degree program of Filmology (including TV) in 1998. In 1999, the College established the postdoctoral station of the Chinese Language Literature. In 2000, our doctoral program become eight from the beginning of only one. 

2.Strengthen scientific research strength, launch a landmark influential academic research

Since 1996, the College strengthen academic research, for more high-quality results and the national construction of spiritual civilization and material civilization service. In the Ninth Five-Year, the College has published 134 academic monographs, 1146 papers, in which 80 monographs, more than 200 papers, and 4 translations are symbolic achievements and some results also have international influences in academia.

In addition, the College won 4 national awards, 31 provincial and ministerial level awards. We have 173 research projects, including 31 national projects, 10 State Social Science Fund Project. 

3.Train excellent personnel for the country

The core of personnel training in the College focuses on two aspects: one is to train young teachers, and the other is to train doctoral students and graduate students. Now, the College has 33 professors, including 30 under the age of 55; 23 associate professors, including 22 under the age of 45. In addition, in five years, the College have trained 65 PhDs, 418 graduate students.

4.Significantly improve the teaching and research conditions

School of Chinese Language and Literature now has a collection of 170,000, of which 160,000 Chinese books, 10000 English books. There are 304 kinds of domestic and foreign journals, including 220 kinds of Chinese periodicals and 84 kinds of foreign periodicals. We also have 2 laboratories with a total area of 200 square meters and a reference room which has two reading room with a total area of over 500 square meters.
