On March 16th, Prof. Wenfei Liu, the doctoral advisor of Capital Normal University and judge of the National Social Foundation of China, delivered an academic speech entitled “The Dilemma of Literary Translation” in Nanjing Normal University. Prof. Jie Zhang, Prof. Zhijun Yan, the dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures, teachers and all the graduate students attended the lecture. This lecture was presided by Prof. Shiyan Xu, director of the Translation Department.
Beginning with the concept of literary translation, Prof. Liu analysed the dilemma of literary translation with various examples from his own experiences of translating both Russian and English literature. He presented five paradoxes concerning the creativity in translation, the translator’s identity, the impossibility to translate literariness, the impact of languages and the necessity of retranslation. Prof. Liu’s analysis lead to new understanding on the fundamental problems in translation, including translation evaluation, faithfulness in translation, relationship between the original text and the translated text, and translation criticism.
Prof. Liu’s unique interpretation of literary translation not only presented his in-depth thinking towards literature translation, but also enlightened students’ thoughts.
