From September 1 to October 31, 956 interns who were admitted to our university in 2014 and are from 15 teaching majors conducted a two-month educational internship at 47 four-star senior high schools and seven high-quality junior high schools in 13 major cities in Jiangsu province. As an important part of the training of normal students, educational internship has always been highly valued by the school leaders. From October 17 to October 25, Hu Mingqiang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, Chen Guoxiang, Principal of the university, Shang Hongbo, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, Tian Lixin, Fu Kangsheng, and Zhang Xuyu, vice principals of the university, Xu Weiming, member of the Party Committee and Secretary of the discipline inspection commission, Ben Guodong, member of the Party Committee and Director of the Party Office, and persons in charge of President’s Office, Dean’s Office, the Students’ Affairs Office and relevant colleges went to 13 major cities like Nanjing, Suzhou, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou and Taizhou to investigate and supervise educational internship work, and visit the interns.
At the meetings held in the internship schools, persons in charge introduced such aspects as the education and performance of teachers' morality, internship instruction and logistical services. They thought that the interns from our university had solid basic teaching skills and high professional quality. They also thought that the interns were modest, fond of learning and good at thinking, and had a strong sense of responsibility. They praised the interns for actively completing the educational internship work, and integrating themselves with life and work at the internship schools. These internship schools expressed their wishes to further widen the channels of cooperation with our university and strengthen communication between them and our university.
The representatives of the interns did detailed reports in the aspects of subject teaching internship, head teacher internship, guidance from instructors, participation in teaching and researching activities, demonstration classes and internship group work. They shared their experiences of the gradual change from being nervous to being calm on the podium during the internship lasting more than one month. They also shared their feelings of happiness which were experienced from being with students. Based on the educational internship, they put forward some suggestions in terms of training programs of normal students like teacher education curriculum and practice-linked arrangement.
School leaders expressed their gratitude to the internship schools for careful and thoughtful arrangements for the interns, and patient and meticulous guidance. They also felt satisfied with the interns’ outstanding performance. Shang Hongbo said that the interns should pay attention to doing research on students, education philosophies and teaching methods as well as teaching administration systems at the internship schools to improve their own research ability. Tian Lixin hoped that the interns would make use of the educational internship to change their roles from students to teachers, think about the nature of education and improve their teaching quality in practice. Fu Kangsheng stressed that interns’ moral education played an important role in educational internship and focused on the essence and improvement. Zhang Xuyu reminded the interns of strengthening classroom management ability and at the same time paying heed to students’ knowledge, abilities and personal qualities to form efficient classes. Xu Weiming stated that the interns should reflect and sum up in the process of the educational internship so as to gradually form their own teaching philosophy.
Chen Guoyang shared his own educational internship experiences with the interns, pointing out that being an excellent teacher needed continuous practice. He also encouraged the interns to have the qualities and a sense of responsibilities as students of Nanjing Normal University. The interns were also encouraged to understand the deep meaning of the motto in our university in practice— “having good morals, improving people’s living condition, being devoted to study, and being agile” — and try their best to inherit and carry forward spirits of Nanjing Normal University.
Hu Minqiang hoped that the interns should deeply reflect on the problems encountered in the educational internship, actively make use of the resources provided by our universities and the internship schools to solve the problems. Meanwhile, having taken his own educational practice into consideration, Hu Minqiang put forward further suggestions for plans for teacher education work in our university, which would provide motivation and guidance for deepening teacher education reform in our university. He also required the interns to bear their instructors’ guidance and teaching in mind, seize the opportunities to learn to teach and behave, and complete the internship work successfully.
