The “Red Candle” Teenage Volunteer Association of the School of Teacher Education Promoted One-on-one Voluntary Tutoring Activities in Xianlin Neighborhood
On the morning of December 1st, Zhu Hongmei, volunteer from the “Red Candle” Teenage Volunteer Association of the School of Teacher Education came to Pan Zai’en’s home to carry out the one-on-one voluntary tutoring activities in Xianlin neighborhood. During her service, she not only assisted him in scientific subjects, but also offered great help in liberal arts.

Crossing the hazy fog and braving the bitter wind, Zhu Hongmei arrived there early in the morning. The first task, which required Zhu to instruct Pan to compose several sentences according to the given picture, was somewhat challenging. This topic of the picture-writing was about taking pleasure in helping people and respecting the elderly. It told a story that a child helped a granny to pick up the pears on the ground. However, as to the reasons for the pears’ dropping down, Zhu and Pan had different ideas. Zhu thought that the granny dropped the pears carelessly while Pan considered that the pears were knocked down when the child greeted the granny. They two insisted on their own idea. Finally, Zhu decided to respect Pan’s own thought. The second task was to teach Pan the “seven”, “eight” and “nine” part of the multiplication table. Zhu led Pan to calculate each equation to deepen his impression, let him familiarize all the multiplication table and gave him some time to recite all the rules. In the end, Zhu carefully checked whether Pan had remembered all of them. To Zhu’s delight, though not that proficient, Pan could basically grasp all the contents of the table. Zhu also innovatively led Pan to read Hundred Thousand Whys, teaching through lively activities and in the meantime extending his knowledge.

The one-on-one voluntary tutoring activities in Xianlin neighborhood sponsored by the “Red Candle” Teenage Volunteer Association of the School of Teacher Education is practical training of the teaching skills of the students majored in teacher education. It not only tests their teaching abilities, but also cultivates their abilities to deal with the teacher-student relationships. We hope that more people can participate in this meaningful activity.
